The Rural Leadership North Dakota Seminar held its second session in Fargo November 19-21, 2009.

Thursday afternoon, Mel Nelson, President and CEO of Executive Management System, Inc. introduced the participants to the Leadership Challenge. Participants received their results from the 360 Leadership Assessment.  Time was given to review the results and than a group discussion took place.

Mid afternoon we boarded the NDSU transit system and headed to the downtown campus of NDSU and arrived at Barry Hall where we met Class Five participants of the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (MARL) group. Guest speaker for the afternoon was Dr. D.C. Coston, NDSU Vice President for Agriculture and University Extension. After Dr. D. C. Coston's presentation participants were taken on a tour of Barry Hall.

Late Thursday afternoon we hopped back on the NDSU transit system and arrived back on campus just in time to walk to NDSU's Alumni Center for the evening social and meal with our new friends from MARL. Also in attendance were alumni from RLND from the surrounding communities along with Senator Judy Lee of West Fargo and Senator Tony Grindberg of Fargo. The evening presentation was given by Steve Stark who illustrated the history of Theodore Roosevelt as it relates to leadership as well as North Dakota and Minnesota.

Friday began with a return visit from Mel Nelson where we picked up where we left off on Thursday afternoon on Leadership Assessment feedback. At noon we boarded a Red River Trails bus and went to NDSU's Distance and Continuing Education & RSVP+ North Dakota offices. Our first presenter of the afternoon was Nancy Olson, Manager of RSVP+ North Dakota & the Americorp VISTA Programs for the state of North Dakota and a graduate of the RLND program. Nancy showed a video and talked with us about her project and our upcoming projects. We boarded the bus and headed over to NDSU Research Park and our presenter Brenda Wyland, NDSU Research Park Incubator Manager. Brenda talked with us about the research that is going on at NDSU and how they are helping entrepreneurs get started in business. After Brenda's presentation we travelled to Ulteig where Brad Swenson, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, presented on Ulteig and showed a video on the many different areas that Ulteig is involved in.  After Brad's presentation we went down the road to Cetero Research, Inc. (formerly PRACS) where Jack Kannack presented on the research that is being done at Cetero. We were also given a tour of the facility. We drove through the Microsoft campus before returning to the Days Inn.

We loaded the bus at 6:45 pm to travel to Toscana's for our evening meal. We were joined by Teresa Huff's husband, Jeff, and Kevin McLean's wife, Joetta.

Saturday had arrived and how quickly the days had flown by! Marie Hvidsten, RLND Program Director presented on the Abilene Paradox. A discussion took place about our RLND projects and write-up along with our upcoming seminars in Langdon and Williston. Before we knew it, time had come for reflections and evaluations and our second seminar came to an end.
