Bringing STEM to Our Local School System

by Kim Schuler

Kim SchulerNorth Dakota is the place to be! Sounds odd, doesn’t it? Think about it for a minute. North Dakota has the potential to be a leader in wind energy, oil production and biomass. What else do we have? We have difficult time retaining our North Dakota youth after college. My project for the RLND class is bringing awareness to the youth of Cavalier County that North Dakota is the place that they want to be and that there are jobs here for them!

I have partnered with the Langdon Public School System and North Dakota State College of Science(NDSCS) to get Langdon Area high school and middle school involved with some of the programs that NDSCS provides in the educational areas that our nation is concentrating on, commonly known as the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)progam that will prepare students for the industries of tomorrow. The four areas that we have been concentrating on are nanoscience, alternative energy, microelectronics, and biotechnology.

With this program NDSCS will come to the local schools for lessons, invite the students to their campus labs for science days and guide local teachers in their efforts to develop their own academy!  This partnership will help prepare the students of the Langdon Public School system in these four areas of science before they move on to college.
