Improving Traill County recreation

by Melissa Beach

Melissa BeachTraill County is positioned between two of the largest cities in North Dakota. We see our location as an excellent opportunity to grow and develop our county. The recreational facilities in Traill County are in need of updates and the recreational groups need organization to better meet the needs of the county. There are great recreational tourism opportunities that need to be developed to forward the tourism industry in our county.

The first phase of my project is updating existing recreation facilities around the county. One specific facility has been flooded numerous times and is in a county owned park along the Red River. This park is used by a number of people, especially those traveling to our area to fish the Red River. It is very important to provide safe and presentable facilities that showcase our county to our residents and visitors. Funding for these projects will primarily come from grants, but additional funding may be provided by Traill County. Other updates may come to city park facilities and walking/biking trails.

The second portion of the project which we are working on at the same time is to organize and assist recreational organizations in the county. There are a number of groups that continue to get smaller due to lack of advertising and awareness. We are in the process of contacting a number of recreational groups around the county to facilitate a county-wide recreational website. The recreational groups will be listed on the Traill County EDC website along with an informational paragraph, contact information for group leaders and meeting dates and times.

The second phase of the project is a long-term planning portion for the recreational sustainability and development throughout Traill County. My plan is to work with existing recreational groups and community leaders to study the potential for new recreational opportunities throughout the county. We would also like to research a cooperative arrangement for collaboration among Traill County cities which will allow them the ability to network their resources for improved opportunities throughout the county. My plan is to initiate the meetings and find an advisor to research the long-term plans for the county. This portion of the project will also be grant funded with supplemental funds coming from Traill County.
