NIFA Grant Requirement

The USDA NIFA recently posted a new requirement for researchers accepting a NIFA award.

New recipients of NIFA grants will be required to have training in the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RCR).  The new terms and conditions for NIFA grants state: “By accepting a NIFA award the grantee assures that program directors, faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and any staff participating in the research project receive appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research and that documentation of such training will be maintained.”

Thus, everyone involved in the grant must receive this training. NDSU has two options in place that will meet this requirement:  a) a free online RCR training module through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) (https://www.citiprogram.org/; go to link for Responsible Conduct of Research) that produces a certificate of completion that is emailed to Sponsored Programs; or b) an NDSU team-taught course that will be offered again this fall, with Glenn Dorsam as the instructor (BIOC 720 - Scientific Integrity, 1 credit).

The new NIFA research terms and conditions are dated April, 2013.  The complete document may be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/rtc/agencyspecifics/nifa_413.pdf
