Update on New Canning Lids

If you have produce that you are canning or are planning to can be sure to check the directions on the box of lids that you are using.

**New guidelines say to wash and rinse the lids and they are ready to use.  In the past, lids were heated and/or boiled before using but some of the new lids no longer require heating.  If you have some jars that are not sealing this could be the reason.   Jar lids are not reusable but the rings can be reused.

Check out the Ransom County Extension website for all the current food preservation information and guidelines.  Use only USDA or North Dakota State University Extension information and make sure it is current.  Feel free to call the extension office at 683-6128 with food preservation questions.  We can also check gauges on pressure canners to make sure they are accurate.

Food preservation is a science and it is important to follow reliable information and recipes.

Have fun preserving that summer produce and enjoy safe home canned produce next winter.
