Proper management of household wastes

Paint wastes:

The best thing to do with leftover paint and varnish is to use them up. If you can't use them, try donating them to a church, daycare center, theater group, recreation department, community service organizations or neighbors. If you must dispose of paint or varnish, contact your local solid waste department to see if a household hazardous waste collection program is available. If you must throw paint or varnish away, dry them out first. Paint and varnish should be dried outside the home to allow vapors and fumes escape. Find a safe ventilated work area away from children, pets or vandals. Or you can mix paint waste with cat litter or Floor-Dry™ until no liquids are left. Once the paint is dry, leave the lid off the can and place in the garbage.

Used Oil:

Used oil should not be poured down interior or outside drains, into a storm sewer, or on the ground.  Some automotive shops will take used oil from households. Contact your local solid waste department to see if there is a used oil collection tank in your community.

Never pour antifreeze into a septic tank, storm sewer or lagoon sewer. If the antifreeze cannot be reused, given away or recycled, it can be discharged into the sanitary sewer with permission from the city wastewater plant.
