Prevent Diabetes by Making Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Are you at risk for type 2 diabetes or have prediabetes? If so, you may benefit from the National Diabetes Prevention Program. NDSU Extension, Ramsey County and CHI St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake have teamed up to offer this program in the Devils Lake community. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a lifestyle change intervention arming you with skills to make lasting changes to lose weight and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Trained lifestyle coaches and Registered Dietitians, Kathy Brandt and Sara Laite, will help you all the way, and you will have fun and support from others with similar goals in the program. The National Diabetes Prevention Program is led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An individual with prediabetes can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes by making simple lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and moderate exercise.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes has increased dramatically over the past twenty years making it one of the most devastating public health concerns today. Over 50,000 North Dakota adults have type 2 diabetes. An even more astonishing number is 202,000. The number of North Dakota adults with prediabetes or at risk for type 2 diabetes, making the National DPP vital to reversing the upward trend of type 2 diabetes.

Prediabetes is when a person’s blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

Eligible participants are: at least 18 years old, overweight, are not pregnant, and do not currently have diabetes. Interested participants are encouraged to check with their health care provider to find out if they have prediabetes or are at risk for type 2 diabetes. You can take the risk test online here: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/preventnd/take-a-risk-test.

Program participants learn how to eat healthy, be more physically active, manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes. Groups meet for one year - once a week for 12 weeks, then twice a month for 4 months and once a month for 4 months. Together participants celebrate their successes and find ways to overcome obstacles.
