March 19, 2012 Horticulture Column

Spring is here, it seems, and not the usual fast approaching type.  I have seen some yards getting cleaned and one might get the urge to get going on the cleanup.  I was playing with the grandchildren on Sunday and the yard was actually ready to be worked with.  Very often many of us get too excited and get started on the early side.  I had a homeowner call one Sunday morning a year ago and asked what to do as they cleaned their yard and left lawn mower tracks across the yard, meaning the yard was too wet.

Spring weed control!!!

Each spring I get many phone calls wondering about using some of these early spring weed control “Weed and Feed” or products that offer “Crab Grass” control.  One caution I urge is that for any pre-emergent weed control to offer good weed control soil temperatures need to be near 50 degrees.  A weed control product  placed earlier will not offer control as the new weed seeds are not germinating yet and only do so when the soil temperatures reach that magic number.  Spring is also a great time for some additional grass seed across your lawns.  I usually put down a pound per 1000 sq. ft. and really improves my lawn for the growing season.  I will be visiting each week from now on about the horticulture world.  The do’s don’ts of my yard could help you stay away from any issues.

This past weekend Deb and I was in Bismarck for the Class B girls tournament.  We were very well represented at the state tournament by Lakota-Adams-Edmore.  LAE played Grafton the closest and was actually ahead at half and the same goes for the Minot Ryan game. Congratulations to the team and coaches along with the very large fan support from the across the area.  I can’t say exactly but by visual would say that the LAE cheering section out numbered any other team represented.  It is also a great time to get to meet old friends from the across the state.  There are many faithful followers of class B basketball that attend these tournaments every year as many new friendships are formed.  Congratulation LAE girls basketball.
