January 25, 2013 Agriculture Column

It is so hard to believe that we are already approaching March.  I told someone yesterday that we are only one month away from possibly being in the field.  I don’t think that will happen this year; however some time back in the 50’s or early 60’s, I think it was the early 60”s, my grandfather Weed planted durum on March 6th only to have a dumping of snow that night or the next day.  I know for sure that we will not have field work beginning due to the all the snow around.  In fact, I am going to predict one major snow storm for us.  I am hoping I am wrong but I have a bad feeling.

The days have gotten noticeably longer, unfortunately, the time daylight savings will soon switch too.  My own personal opinion is to leave the time alone all year long.  So what if we have different darkness or earlier or later light.  I just get used to one time and then bang we have to change again.

Farm meetings are in full swing and my meeting schedule is no different.  Next week I am to be in a meetings everyday except Friday and none of them are here locally.  One meeting I am attending talks about soybean cyst nematode.  We have been very fortunate to not have that pest show its appearance but it is only a matter of time with all of our soybeans and edible beans in the area.  There has also been talk it could affect corn.  We do not need that.  We are to learn what to look for (as I have never actually seen soybean cyst nematode in person) and suggestions of  how to protect our crop.  The markets are looking favorable for another big year of soybeans and edible beans.  This will also mean that we will have another year of the possible threat of soybean aphids.  Will have to wait to see what the weather brings us this summer.
