What a winter storm this past weekend, in southeastern North Dakota.  There was many other places that got smacked with snow during this storm as well but North Dakota relates to us.  We headed to Detroit Lakes late Friday to do a little blue gill fishing.  We stay at a very large cabin east of Detroit Lakes and they had over a foot about 10 days ago and after calling our friend last night found another 16 inches at his location.  If there is any glory to his snow, he does not get lamblasted with wind stuck in the woods like he is.  He does; however, heat his home with an outdoor woodburner, which in turn heats his hot water source for the house.  When we were there his wood pile was covered with snow so now it will be really covered making for a lot more work.

Land Value Workshop

This coming Wednesday we will be holding a land value workshop here at the Ramsey County Courthouse.  The meeting will be held in the courthouse meeting room and will begin at 6 pm.  Dwight Aakre and Andy Swension (NDSU Extension Economists) and Willie Huot (Grand Forks County Extension agent) will share some insight and strategies on land values and rental agreements along with other items pertaining to land values.

One such item is negotiating a new land rental agreement.  Rather than complaining about the other offer sit down and discuss the different happenings in your surroundings.  This could mean how many tillable acres are you actually farming or could mean the markets are really not favoring a positive net return; however, at the present markets are very favorable or maybe the landlord might be willing to make some improvements in the quality the property.  All in all, visiting over a cup of coffee makes these relationships long lasting and lays everything on the table.

This same workshop was held both days at Lake Region Extension Roundup with many calling about having an evening meeting.  So, here we go!!!!   I know that it is Ash Wednesday but that is the only time our presenters were able to make it to Devils Lake.  You can attend church and then stop over.  The meeting will start at 6pm and conclude about 9 pm.  See you there.

Ramsey County Crop Improvement annual meeting

The very next day Wednesday, February 14th  (Valentines Day), we will hold our annual Ramsey County Crop Improvement meeting at the K.C. Hall.  The meeting will begin at 9:30 with coffee at at 9 am.  Mike Hergert (Red River Farm Newwork) will be our featured speaker and will speak at 10 am.  At the conclusion of Mikes’ visit we will honor our Ramsey County Agriculturist of the year award to Bob and Helen Weed.  At the conclusion of the meeting we will then enjoy a noon lunch sponsored by the crop improvement board.  A busy week upcoming.
