January 30, 2012 Agriculture Column

This weather is absolutely fabulous.  I did hear that Alaska is having one of the coldest winters on record and hope that stuff stays up there.  It does make me wonder; however how long it will take for that cold to get here.  Unfortunately all good things come to an end, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.  It is also very hard to believe that it is almost February, like tomorrow.  My how the winter has flown by and now we got to get started thinking about the up coming months.  The first thing on the horizon is the Annual Ramsey County Crop Improvement meeting.

Ramsey County Crop Improvement annual meeting

The Ramsey County Crop Improvement annual meeting will be held on February 16th at the K.C Hall, in Devils Lake.  The meeting will begin at 9:30 with speakers addressing tiling saline areas.  Hans Kandel (NDSU Extension agronomist) will talk about salinity and how tiling can/could help alleviate salinity.  Tom Scherer (NDSU Extension water quality engineer) will talk about design and other issues facing tiling saline areas.  Roxanne Johnson (NDSU Extension water quality associate) will address water quality issues with tiling.  Jason Sieler (Resource Conservationist) will visit about rules and regulations from the NRCS side.  If time allows I will give an update on the saline project at Edmore.

This will be followed by a noon sponsored meal.  At approximately 12:45 we will begin our annual meeting.  At 1pm we will hold our only commodity election (Wheat commodity election).  The day should conclude by 1:30.  Coffee and rolls will be served beginning at 9 am.  Hope you see you there.

Prosper HRSW

Ramsey County Crop Improvement still has bushels of Prosper HRSW for sale.  Prosper was allocated to counties last spring with being the first year of distribution to county producers.  Prosper has very similar characteristics to Faller with a very slight increase in protein and under somewhat normal conditions could be a little bit better yielder.  The variety trials, this past year, had Prosper slightly ahead of faller in many locations but with non significant difference.  If you are interested in obtaining some seed stop by our office for an application.  The price is $16.55/bushel and will be opened to the rest of the state beginning on February 1rst.
