December 10, 2012 Agriculture Column

Well, it feels like winter is here to stay today.  I mentioned this once but will one more time, I used to like the snow and cold but I have since been consumed by nicer temperatures and conditions.  A couple of other notes of interest:  #1.  Go Bison.  That defense has been outstanding.  I don’t recall info but I think it is something like 14 quarters since a touchdown has been scored on the defense.  The touchdown on Saturday was scored on an interception.  ???2.  The Vikings won also.  At times they look pretty good and then the next week it would appear they forgot to wake up on Sunday.  Adrian Pederson is one awesome runner.  I can remember when they drafted him.  I was actually watching the draft and when they announced his name as their choice I was so disgusted that I QUIT watching the draft and almost decided on a different team to cheer for.  I thought they needed a quarterback worse and still think they need one but that Pederson can really get the job done.  I was definitely wrong with that one.

Lake Region Extension Roundup

Lake Region Extension Roundup is just around the corner and we are really getting geared up for the two day extravaganza.  Our program looks very solid again and now hope the weather cooperates.  I have been told that there has never been a canceled Roundup due to the cold or a winter storm.  Our quest speaker the first day will be Drew Lerner, World Weather Inc.  He comes to us from Kansas and is the featured weather forecast analyst for the Red River Farm Network.  Drew has spoken to groups the area but we have generally acquired Leon Osborne as our weather guru.  He could not attend this year and a change is always good.  So, DON’T FORGET to come and listen to Drew on the first day of Roundup, January 8, 1 pm.

The second day of Roundup will conclude with Mike Krueger (The Money Farm).  We have seen marketing like never before with prices remaining quite high.  Unfortunately, so have input costs so we have invited Mike back to give his perspective on marketing strategies for the next couple of years.  I have mentioned this before and will again that doing some forward pricing is not a bad objective, so long as it profitable and you do not have to do a whole bunch.  Do a little bit and if prices change you have more options at that point.  So, DON’T FORGET to come and listen to Mike Krueger, January 9th at 2:30 pm at the World War II Memorial building.  SEE YOU AT ROUNDUP.
