How To Create a New Publications Landing Page

Step by step instructions for creating a landing page for a publication.

Find a Publication

  1. Go to http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs and find the publication you want to create a landing page for.
  2. Open the PDF version of the publication, if available.
  3. Check the most recent date at the bottom of the publication's cover.
    1. If that date is more than 6 years ago, do not create a landing page for that publication. Add the title and publication number to the list of expired publications on the X drive.
    2. If that date is less that 6 years ago, note that date, you will need it later.

Capture the Cover

  1. Capture an image of the publication cover using Jing or another screen capture tool.
  2. If necessary, zoom out until you can see the complete cover on your screen.
  3. Select the total area of the publication cover and click "Capture Image" in Jing
  4. Name the image and click the "Save" button to save the image to your computer.

Login to Ag CMS

  1. Go to http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/agcms
  2. Click the "Topic & Other Sites Login" link in the "Logins" box on the right-side of the page
  3. Login with your Ag CMS username and password
  4. Find and click on "Educational Materials" in the left-side menu
  5. Click the "Contents" tab
  6. Click the "Landing Pages" folder

Copy & Paste To Create a Landing Page

  1. Click"Master Landing Page" in "Landing Pages" folder
  2. Once "Master Landing Page" loads, click "Actions" on the right-side of the top green bar and choose "Copy"
  3. Next click "Landing Pages" near the bottom of the left-side navigation
  4. Find and click the name of the folder you want to place the landing page in
  5. Once you are in the right folder, click "Actions" on the right-side of the top green bar and choose "Paste"

(Note: You could, alternatively, copy and paste a publication landing page with similar content and categories as the one you are creating. This can save time.)

Rename the Item

  1. You should now see an item titled "Master Landing Page" (If you copy and paste a different landing page, the new page will have the same title as the page you copied) at the bottom of the folder's contents (there may be several screens of contents, so go to the last screen)
  2. Click on the name of the "Master Landing Page" item
  3. Once "Master Landing Page" loads, click "Actions" on the right-side of the top green bar and choose "Rename"
  4. Change the "Title" to "name of publication - publication number" (e.g. "Corn Insects of North Dakota - E631")
  5. Change the "Short Name" to the same as the title but with all lower case letters, hyphens replacing spaces and special characters like "&" removed (e.g. "corn-insects-of-north-dakota-e361")
  6. Click the "Rename All" button at the bottom of the screen

Edit the Landing Page

  1. Click the "Edit" tab to update the information on the landing page
  2. Add the author or authors including full name and title (e.g. "Ron Smith, Extension Horticulturist"). Use "Shift"+"Enter" on your keyboard to add a single line space between authors
  3. Add the number of pages in the PDF or print version of the publication
  4. Enter the publication number
  5. Enter "Yes" or "No" under "Available in Print?"
  6. If the publication is marked "For Sale Only" go to the Distribution Center Online Store, then find the publication in the store and click on it
  7. Highlight and opy the URL of the publication in the Distribution Center Online Store
  8. Return to the landing page you are creating in the Ag CMS. Highlight the "Order Publication" link and click the "Insert External Link" button (looks like the Earth) from the visual editor menu in the "Body text" area. Then enter the direct URL of that publiaction's page in the Distribution Center Online Store. Click "OK" when finished.

Adding Categories

  1. Click the "Categorization" button at the top of the "Edit Article" screen to select categories (keywords) for the publication.
  2. Refer to the left-side menu of the Educational Materials site to determine which categories you want that publication to appear in
  3. Select those and any other appropriate categories (keywords) from the "Existing Categories" list by clicking them. Hold down your "Ctrl" key on your keyboard to select more than one category.

Add an Expiration Date

  1. Click the "Dates" button at the top of the "Edit Article" screen to an expiration date for the publication.
  2. Enter and expiration date 6 years after the latest date on the bottom of the publication cover (as noted above).
  3. Enter the last day of the month the publication should expire, for example if the latest date on the publication is August 2008, enter the expiration date as August 31, 2014. You do not need to enter a time.

Exclude From Navigation

  1. Next hide the landing page from the left-side navigation by clicking the "Settings" button at the top of the "Edit Article" screen
  2. Place a check mark in the box to the left of "Exclude from navigation" by clicking in the box
  3. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the screen

Add Sample Images From the Publication

  1. To add an image of the publication cover and other images of interest from the publication, click "Manage Images" near the top of the newly saved landing page
  2. Click "Upload Images"
  3. When uploading the image of the publication cover, enter the publication title in the "Title" field. If uploading an image from another page of the publication, enter a descriptive title (e.g. "a list of effective pesticides from Corn Insects of North Dakota"). Leave the "Description" field blank.
  4. Click the "Browse" button to find the image file you want to upload on your computer. Select the file and click "Open"
  5. Click the "OK" button. When you are finished uploading images, click "Close"
  6. Use the "Manage Images" menu to change the order of or delete images.
  7. When finished, click the orange box with the white "X" at the top-right of the "Manage Images" area.

Link to the Publication

  1. To link to the the actual publication from the landing page, click "Manage Links" near the top of the newly saved landing page
  2. Click "Upload Links"
  3. Enter the publication title and version (PDF) in the "Title" field (e.g. "Corn Insects of North Dakota - PDF"). Leave the "Description" field blank.
  4. Enter the URL of the version of the publication you want to link to in the "URL" field. (It should start with http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs)
  5. Click the "OK" button. When you are finished adding links, click "Close"
  6. Use the "Manage Links" menu to change the order of or delete links.
  7. When finished, click the orange box with the white "X" at the top-right of the "Manage Links" area.

Publish the Landing Page

  1. You are now ready to publish your landing page. Click "State: Private" at the top-right of your landing page
  2. Choose "Publish"
  3. That's it! You are done.
