Recognizing herbicide injury in potato

Recognizing herbicide injury in potato

This presentation is from a talk I gave at the International Crop Expo on February 21, 2019. In this presentation herbicide injury in potato is discussed and shown from common modes of action. Herbicide injury can come from many sources and express in different ways, but other plant stresses can be misdiagnosed as herbicide injury. It's always important to sample tissue for confirmation of herbicide injury.

Improving Potato Uniformity with Plant Growth Regulators - Poster

Improving Potato Uniformity with Plant Growth Regulators - Poster

The application of plant growth regulators (PGRs), most commonly gibberellic acid (GA) has been commonly used to improve emergence and influence stem and tuber number. The challenge has been the treatment of GA has been frustrating because of various measurements and application styles for this very potent product. In this experiment we established a standard seed treatment with known rate applied in combinations of gibberellic acid, cytokinin (CK), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to 10 potato cultivars in field studies performed in North Dakota. In some varieties, emergence, stem number and plant height were increased, while others did not respond to treatments. Additionally, some varieties experienced tuber elongation and a shift in the tuber profile, but rarely yield was increased. PGRs manipulate stem and tuber number and this can be used to improve tuber size profile for the desired use. PGR sensitivity it tied to variety and seed age.

Aphid Alert Week of August 18-24

Aphid Alert Week of August 18-24

Aphid vector counts are still decreasing. This week we recovered a total of 133 aphids, 117 of which were vectors. We did, however, only have 10 sites reporting.

Blightline August 20, 2018

No late blight is reported in ND or MN or MB. Late blight is reported in commercial fields in Adams and Marquette counties in Wisconsin. Conditions remain not favorable for late blight the past few days. Continue to apply protectant fungicides on a seven-day schedule for irrigated fields and a 7 to 10 day schedule for non-irrigated fields. Scout fields for late blight until vine kill and harvest.

Aphid Alert week of August 11-17, 2018

Aphid Alert week of August 11-17, 2018

Well, the aphid vector numbers are down a bit from last week - we caught approximately what we caught 2 weeks ago. We're still seeing high diversity in the species captured, recovering aphids from 12 different aphid species from 15 of the 16 sites reporting. Hoople (42), Sabin (33), Ada (29), Gully (22), and the site in Nebraska (26) led the counts in trap captures this week.
