Aphid Alert for July 11-15
More traps are reporting and while aphid vector numbers are slowly rising, although this is partly because of additional trap site reporting. The PVY Risk Index numbers are starting to creep up, check the maps below for your area's risk. We recovered Green Peach Aphids from 3 locations (Crookston, Hoople and Lake of the Woods). The rest of the vector species recovered were a bit of a mixed bag and generally low. As always though, keep scouting!

No late blight has been reported in ND, MN or MB. Late blight (US23) has been reported near Bronson in Branch County, Michigan, and in Maryland. Late blight severity values are accumulating in north central ND and northwestern MN due to the recent rains, and some sites have reached or are nearing the threshold value of 15. At this value, the accumulated weather conditions are favorable for late blight infection if inoculum is present. The protective fungicides manzozeb and chlorothalonil provide protection for both late and early blight and are best applied just before or at row closure. We recommend that growers continue to scout often for late blight.

Colorado Potato Beetle Foliar Insecticides
It’s shaping up to be a Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB) year in the Red River Valley. Seems even if an at-plant insecticide was applied, CPB are plentiful in some fields. There are a few possible reasons this is happening. Here is a list of insecticides and their estimated efficacy.
Potatoes in Flooded Fields
The recent excessive rainfall in potato fields can cause anaerobic conditions, making potatoes susceptible to bacterial soft rot, lenticels openings, and blackheart among other problems. This article discusses some of these issues that may occur from water-logged soils.

Continuing wet weather will provide conditions favorable for late blight if inoculum is present.
