Royal Splendor® Norway Spruce

Picea abies ‘Noel' (Family: Pinaceae)

Description: Striking evergreen landscape specimen characterized by a narrower, upsweeping branch angle with brighter emerald-green needle color. Royal Splendor® Norway Spruce maintains a narrowly-pyramidal form which is not typical of the species which typically develops drooping penulous tertiary branchlets when mature.

Form (Shape): Narrowly-pyramidal habit.

Growth Rate: Medium to fast (especially in youth).

Foliage: Bright green, semi glossy needles year round, devoid of drooping, pendulous tertiary branchlets, which typify this species.

Texture: Medium

Flower: Monoecious, male flowers are infrequent, female flowers are terminal in crown and ruby-red.

Fruit: 3 - 5" cylindrical cone, light brown at maturity.

Light Preferences: Full sun to very light shade.

Soil Preferences: Performs best in well-drained soil and is tolerant of higher pH soils.

Propagation: Side grafting or semi-hardwood cuttings.

Diseases: Highly resistant to stigmina needle cast which plagues Colorado blue spruce.

Ornamental Attributes: Royal Splendor® is an outstanding ornamental selection of Norway Spruce with brighter green foliage and perfect narrowly-pyramidal growth habit.

Landscape Attributes: Recommended as a landscape specimen tree in more open areas or as a nice upright screening tree. Royal Splendor® maintains a narrowly-pyramidal form which is not typical of the species which typically develops drooping pendulous tertiary branchlets when mature. This is not the typical Norway Spruce to hide in a windbreak.

Comments: Deer resistant, Stigmina needle cast disease resistant.
