Assistant Professor
Oilseed (Canola and Flax) Breeding, Genetics

The goal of the oilseed breeding program is to develop and release canola and flax cultivars with high seed yield, high oil content, disease resistance/tolerance, and stress tolerance traits adapted to the North-Central region environments. The research includes application of classical breeding method, tissue culture, and molecular markers. North Dakota is the largest producer of canola (≈84%) and flax (≈91%) in the United States. North Dakota State University initiated the canola breeding program in 2006, and the flax breeding/research program in 1890. Different Brassica species and winter canola are utilized in the crossing program for introgression of new traits into spring canola. Flax is an industrial oilseed crop as well as used for food, feed and fiber purpose. The NDSU flax breeding program is devoted to developing flax cultivars for oil and food use in the United States. Research Plot 30 is a historic agriculture site at NDSU where flax has been growing continuously to test for flax wilt since 1894.
