Watch: University Distinguished Professor - Dr. Elias Elias

The focus of the durum wheat breeding and genetics program is to develop durum wheat germplasm/varieties with good agronomic traits and quality and disease resistance to maximize the economic return to the producers and provide excellent quality durum wheat for the domestic pasta industry and the international export market.  The program conducts basic research on agronomic, disease resistance, and quality traits using classical and molecular mapping techniques that will facilitate cultivar development.

Over 90% of the acreage in North Dakota is planted with NDSU’s varieties.  NDSU’s varieties also are grown on some of the acreage in Eastern Montana.  Current varieties have high yield, some tolerance to scab, good color, high mixograph scores, and very good gluten index that is required by the pasta industry.
