Dr. Alan Zuk has donated his Lakota Star Quilt to the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection (ERHCC) at the North Dakota State University Department of Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management.

Zuk, an associate professor in the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences, received the quilt in February 2018 from the South Dakota Rosebud Sioux Tribe as a gift for his service to the St. Francis Mission on the reservation. For the full story on Zuk’s service and gift, see www.ag.ndsu.edu/plantsciences/news/zuk-coordinates-food-donation-to-indian-reservation and www.ag.ndsu.edu/plantsciences/news/zuk-receives-lakota-star-quilt.

The Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection was established during the career of Dr. Emily Reynolds, long time faculty member and department chair of the Department of Textiles and Clothing (now the Department of Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management), and was named in her honor in 1984. Although originally established as a repository for historic costumes to be used for study purposes by graduate students, the collection also includes other types of textiles including quilts and other related items. There are now more than 5000 items in the collection. The purpose of the collection is to provide a historic record of life through preservation of these items.

Susan Clark, the current manager of the collection, said, “The collections committee was thrilled to accept Alan’s offer to donate the Lakota Star Quilt to the ERHCC. It is the only modern piece of Native American textiles that we will have and will be a welcome addition to our permanent collection!”

Items from the collection are displayed periodically at NDSU and other locations. To learn more about the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection, see https://www.ndsu.edu/erhcc/.
