Leah Withrow, a junior from Gardnerville, Nevada, majoring in Sports and Urban Turfgrass Management, was awarded a scholarship by the North Central Turf Grass Association (NCTGA) and the North Dakota Golf Association (NDGA). The scholarship was awarded at the NCTGA Annual Conference and Trade Show held February 28 – March 2 in Fargo. This is the second year in a row Withrow has received the scholarship.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide tuition assistance to students in a college sports turf program. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, students must be a junior or senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA. The selection committee considers GPA, internships, references and an essay written by the student when choosing the recipient.

In addition to her major, Withrow is pursuing minors in Business Administration, Crop and Weed Sciences and Horticulture. She thinks these minors will be an asset to her future career goal of being a head groundskeeper at a Major League Baseball stadium.

Withrow says she chose North Dakota State University because, “I couldn’t see myself going to school anywhere else. I love the size of NDSU, the people, the professors and the town of Fargo.”

Withrow’s academic adviser is Dr. Alan Zuk, associate professor of sports and urban turfgrass management in the Department of Plant Sciences.

The purpose of the NCTGA is to promote the turf grass industry, support turf research and share the findings, and to represent its members in matters of policy regarding the turf grass industry.

The NDGA strives to promote and act in the best interests of the game of golf in the state of North Dakota.
