Maneka Malalgoda and Kaitlyn Peterson, students in the Wheat Quality Research group at North Dakota State University, were honored by the NDSU Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta in April. The Wheat Quality Research group is led by Senay Simsek, Bert L. D’Appolonia Cereal Science and Technology of Wheat Endowed Associate Professor.

Malalgoda was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Student in Agriculture award. This award recognizes high scholastic performance, leadership achievements, professional development related achievements and contributions to the field of agriculture. Malalgoda is a Ph.D. candidate in the Cereal Science program, studying the effect of pre-harvest desiccant timing on starch and protein deposition in wheat.

Peterson was awarded the First Place Undergraduate Poster Presentation award in the inaugural NDSU Gamma Sigma Delta Faculty and Student Symposium held on April 12, 2018. Peterson’s poster was titled Go Clean Label: Can We Replace Chemical Additives in Whole Wheat Breads. Her study looked at how chemical dough conditioners used to produce bread could be replaced with hard red spring wheat, a type of wheat with high protein content. Her results indicated that there is promise in this approach. Peterson is a freshman in the NDSU Animal Science program and works in the Wheat Quality Lab.

Upon graduation, Malalgoda would like to continue her work in cereal chemistry, conducting further research analyzing wheat starch and proteins. Peterson plans to attend veterinary school after completing her studies at NDSU.

Gamma Sigma Delta is the Honor Society of Agriculture with a purpose to advance agriculture research and education, and honor those excelling in all areas of agriculture and related sciences. The NDSU Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta was chartered in 2005.
