North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences M.S. student Aaron Froemke won an event in the North American Weed Science Contest (NAWSC) at the BASF Midwest Research Farm near Seymour, Illinois on July 25, 2019. He placed first in the Graduate Student Problem Solving and Recommendation portion of the competition, where contestants must evaluate a crop production problem in a “role-playing” situation of assisting a farmer with a simulated real life crop production problem and providing recommendations to solve the problem.

The NAWSC is a joint activity planned by the Northeastern, North Central, Southern and Western Weed Science Societies and is hosted by Bayer, BASF, Valent and Corteva Agriscience companies. The contest is also called the “Weed Olympics” and gives students opportunities to test their weed science knowledge and skills, interact and learn from other students, researchers from universities and industry, and promote interest in the discipline of weed science

Close to 250 students from twenty-nine universities participated in the contest. Besides Froemke, three other members of the North Dakota State University weed science graduate team attended; Nathan Haugrud, Joseph Mettler and Kelly Satrom participated in the contest. Dr. Joe Ikely and team advisor Dr. Kirk Howatt also attended.
