Two short courses for craft maltsters and brewers, and malting and industry specialists were taught consecutively at the Northern Crops Institute (NCI) at North Dakota State University in early October. Twenty-six people attended one or both courses. The Barley and Malt Quality Short Course ran October 3-6 and the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Preventive Control Qualified Individual Training ran October 6-7.

The Barley and Malt Quality Short Course covered barley production, malting and brewing procedures, and food safety issues. Dr. Paul Schwarz, professor in the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences, coordinated the course, which included seven other instructors from industry, academia and government. Organizers were the Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences at NDSU (https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/ibms/), the NCI (http://www.northern-crops.com/), and the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (http://www.mbaa.com/). The NCI has offered the Barley and Malt Quality Short Course on a semi-annual basis for the past 33 years.

The HACCP course was taught by Dr. Robert Maddock, who is an associate professor in the NDSU Department of Animal Sciences and has taught more than 75 HACCP and Preventive Control short courses for many different industries. The purpose of this course was to provide HACCP and food safety training to maltsters. Program organizers included NDSU and the North American Craft Maltsters Guild (http://www.craftmalting.com/).

Course participants traveled from California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, and Virginia to attend.
