The North Dakota State University Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is dedicated to ensuring that students are aware of all available financial aid opportunities and works closely with the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources (CAFSNR) and the Department of Plant Sciences to award scholarship funds for students in their programs. Thousands of dollars are available; more than $85,000 was awarded to plant sciences students for the 2017-2018 academic year.

CAFSNR program and general scholarships are funded and administered by the NDSU Foundation and Alumni Association, which works with alumni and industries interested in supporting students in the College. Most of these scholarships are awarded based on scholastic merit and range in value from $100 to $1,650. Qualified students may receive one or more scholarships every year while working on their degree, as long as academic performance is maintained. In 2018, Department of Plant Sciences students received $9,350 of the more than $16,500 available in general scholarship funds and $76,300 available in program scholarships.

CAFSNR program scholarships are designated for the specific programs in the Department of Plant Sciences including undergraduate degrees in Crop and Weed Sciences, Food Science, and Horticulture; and graduate degrees in Cereal Science, Horticulture, and Plant Sciences. The Department of Plant Sciences Scholarship Committee chooses the program scholarship recipients. CAFSNR general scholarships are available for all students in the College and are awarded by the CAFSNR Scholarship Committee.

Once program and general scholarships are awarded, students are notified in August and generally receive the money directly into their university account by the second week of September. They are also invited to the CAFSNR Annual Scholarship Recognition Luncheon in early November. Scholarship donors, department personnel and college and university administrators attend the luncheon with students.

External scholarships are also available at various times and are awarded individually. Criteria for these scholarships varies and are designated by the foundations, companies or associations providing the scholarship. Notifications on these scholarships are listed as External Scholarships on the NDSU Financial Aid and Scholarships website and from faculty advisors and department personnel. In fact, more than $20,000 in external scholarships have been awarded to plant sciences students this year.

Information on all scholarships and the scholarship application can be found at the NDSU Academic Scholarship Application Program web page. Current students must complete their application by March 1; incoming freshmen must complete their application by February 1.

Information is also available at Department of Plant Sciences Scholarships and CAFSNR General Scholarships.
