November 19, 2020

Cereal science graduate students Ana Magallanes López and Jayani Maddakandage Dona from the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University were honored for their research presentations at Cereals & Grains 2020 Online, the virtual annual meeting of the Cereals and Grains Association.

Magallanes López won the award for Best Relationship to the Theme in the Student Research Video Competition for her video, “Ingredients Extracted from Dry Beans: Chemical, Structural, and Functional Characterization” (view it here). The competition provided students an opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills, and originality to create a three- to four-minute video showcasing how their research fits into the greater food system.

Maddakandage Dona was selected as one of three finalists for the Best Student Research Award in the Cereal and Grain Nutrition Division. She presented a poster of her master’s research, “Baking and Nutritional Quality of Bread Made from Wholegrain Hulled Wheat” (view it here). The purpose of this competition is to encourage outstanding student research within the nutrition field. Finalists were selected based on the novelty and significance of their study.

Magallanes López and Maddakandage Dona are pursuing doctoral degrees in the cereal science program and are advised by Dr. Senay Simsek, Bert L. D'Appolonia Cereal Science and Technology of Wheat Endowed Professor and wheat quality project leader.
