Sintayehu Debebe Daba Presents Ph.D. Seminar

Ph.D. candidate Sintayehu Debebe Daba presented a seminar on his doctoral research titled Genetic Diversity and Genome-wide Association Mapping of Agronomic, Disease Resistance, and Quality Traits in Barley Accessions from Ethiopia, ICARDA, and the U.S. on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 on the North Dakota State University campus in Fargo. The main goals of Daba’s research were to understand the genetic basis of several agronomic, disease resistance, and quality traits in barley; and ultimately identifying unique QTL (quality trait loci) that can be incorporated into Ethiopian and NDSU barley breeding programs. Additionally, the research focused on identifying parental materials for Ethiopian and NDSU breeding programs. His research was conducted in North Dakota and two locations in Ethiopia.

Dr. Richard Horsley, NDSU barley breeder and head of the Department of Plant Sciences, and Dr. Flavio Capettini of ICARDA worked with Daba to develop his research plan. The key goal of the research was to improve barley in Daba’s home country, Ethiopia; at ICARDA, now headquartered in Lebanon; and in the U.S., via work at NDSU. Daba explains, “Several of the QTL detected in the study coincided with the position of known loci or reported QTL for the respective traits. The NDSU materials are good parents to improve plant height, lodging resistance, and malt quality in the Ethiopian breeding program. On the other hand, the Ethiopian materials could be used to improve resistance for two leaf diseases (leaf scald and net form net blotch).”

In addition to his Ph.D. research, Daba also initiated and is managing a project focused on developing a nested association mapping (NAM) population using 41 diverse barley materials selected from his Ph.D. research. The goal is to create up to 3000 unique barley lines for future association mapping in the U.S., Ethiopia, or elsewhere in the world.

Daba was a member of the Plant Sciences Graduate Student Association, two time recipient of the Charles and Linda Moses Presidential Scholarship (2012-13, 2013-14), and was awarded the Frank Bain Scholarship in 2014.

Daba has accepted a Post-doctoral Research Associate position in the small grains program at Purdue University. His long-term goal is to be part of the solution to the food security problem at a global level.

Daba’s research committee included Dr. Elias Elias, Dr. Paul Schwarz, and Dr. Robert Brueggeman. Sintayehu’s adviser was Dr. Richard Horsley.
