Roshan Sharma Poudel, native of Chitwan, Nepal, presented a seminar entitled The Acquisition of Useful Disease Resistance Genes for Hard Red Winter Wheat Improvement on January 16, 2015 in Loftsgard Hall at North Dakota State University. His research focused on developing winter-hardy winter wheat germplasm carrying leaf rust and other small grain disease resistance genes.

Sharma Poudel says his research interests have always been small grain breeding and genetics. After working as a research assistant for Nepal Agricultural Research Council, he chose NDSU because of the dynamic small grain research program in the Department of Plant Sciences.

“The research activities at NDSU’s Department of Plant Sciences are intensive, valued, and well-regarded,” says Sharma Poudel. “The extraordinary greenhouse facilities and well-equipped lab provide for opportunities to conduct a diverse range of applied, as well as breakthrough, experiments. Likewise, the course work is well designed and perfected to guide students in their on-going research and toward future career goals. NDSU Plant Sciences is well organized by a group of friendly and ever-smiling staff dedicated towards helping students.”

While attending NDSU Sharma Poudel served as president of the Plant Sciences Graduate Student Association (2013), received the Charles and Linda Moses Presidential Graduate Fellowship (2013, 2014), and earned first place for his oral presentation during the 30th Annual Plant Science Graduate Student Symposium held at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada (2014).

Sharma Poudel plans to work as a researcher in plant genetics in an academic or research institution.

Sharma Poudel’s graduate committee members are Dr. Phil McClean, Dr. Ted Helms, and Dr. Shaobin Zhong. His advisor is Dr. Francois Marais.
