Plant Sciences Students Receive Gamma Sigma Delta Honors

The Gamma Sigma Delta NDSU Chapter hosted their 3rd Annual Faculty and Student Symposium on April 22, 2021 via Zoom. Twenty-two students presented their research and four Department of Plant Sciences students won prizes. In addition, 39 students were inducted into membership.

The Gamma Sigma Delta NDSU Chapter (GSD-NDSU) hosted their 3rd Annual Faculty and Student Symposium on April 22, 2021 via Zoom. Twenty-two students from the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources presented their research, competing for cash prizes, and 39 students were inducted into the GSD-NDSU membership. Faculty officers also were elected.

Presenters from the Department of Plant Sciences swept the graduate student presentation award categories. 

In the Doctoral category, Andrej Svyantek won 1st place with “Dr. Grapelove or: How I Learned to Stop Working and Love the Leaf,” and Edoardo Poletti took 2nd place with "Characterization of Resistance to Dickeya dianthicola in NDSU Potato Germplasm.” Svyantek is advised by Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, and Poletti is advised by Asunta Thompson.

In the Master’s category, Amy Greenberg won 1st place with “Potassium Fertilization and Its Impact on Yield, Nutritive Value, and Winter Hardiness of Alfalfa,” and Hashim Andidi took 2nd place with “High Throughput Phenotyping to Evaluate Metribuzin Sensitivity of Potato.” Greenberg is advised by Marisol Berti, and Andidi is advised by Asunta Thompson.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 symposium was cancelled, so new members were inducted during this year’s meeting for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. 

Department of Plant Sciences students inducted for 2019-2020 were Dylan Barry, Matthew Brooke, Venkata Rao Ganaparthi, Zixuan Gu, Jerica Hall, Nathan Haugrud, Ahasanul Hoque, Seyedali Hosseinirad, Haiyang Jiang, Yang Lan, Eddy lxcotoyac, Alexa Lystad, Jayani Maddakandage Dona, Ana Magallanes Lopez, Joseph Mettler, McKayla Neubauer, Peder Schmitz, Serap Vatansever, Adam Walz, Frank Wilczek, Alex Wittenberg, and Muxin Zhao.

Department of Plant Sciences students inducted for 2020-2021 were Sagar Adhikari, Ryan Archer, Enise Ayyildiz, Liuyi Chang, Baochen Fang, Kun Gao, Amy Greenberg, Jed Grow, Shakil Hosain, Emma Larson, Marcus Mack, Ashok Mandal, Kenneth Mozea, Neil Olson, Xiaoxi Qi, Jenna Steffes, and Runhao Wang.

The organizers of the GSD-NDSU Symposium were Mukhlesur Rahman, Department of Plant Sciences associate professor, and Nurun Nahar, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering assistant professor of practice. Rahman served as GSD-NDSU president in 2020-2021 and Nahar served as vice president. 

Department of Plant Sciences associate professor of practice Rebekah Oliver was elected GSD-NDSU president for 2021-2022, and associate professor Kirk Howatt will continue to serve as treasurer. Assistant professor of practice Anuradha Vegi completed her term as historian. Department of Soil Science professor Larry Cihacek will continue to serve as GSD-NDSU secretary.

Gamma Sigma Delta is recognized worldwide as the oldest and largest honor society of agriculture. GSD-NDSU promotes and recognizes high achievements through research and service in the fields of agriculture, biology, botany, chemistry, zoology, and others.
