On December 8, 2017, Nicholas Schimek presented an exit seminar for his Plant Sciences M.S. research, Developing Methodology to Predict and Increase Grain Protein Content in Spring Wheat. He successfully defended his thesis on November 9.

Schimek researched the relationship between late season nitrogen application and grain protein content in spring wheat, and worked to develop techniques to improve the effectiveness of late season nitrogen application.

Schimek, from Deer River, MN, chose North Dakota State University because of the agronomic diversity of the region, which allowed him to work with a variety of crop types, rotations, and management practices. He said, “The culture at NDSU allows for an experience that makes any student feel comfortable, as well as the opportunity to advance your knowledge in a variety of plant science topics to make you an improved professional.”

Besides serving as the secretary of the Plant Sciences Graduate Student Association, Schimek participated in Gamma Sigma Delta. He received the H. L. Bolley Graduate Scholarship in 2017 and placed first in the Current Research for Advancing Precision Agriculture poster session at the 2017 ASA/CSSA/SSSA Conference.

Schimek interned with Monsanto-Westbred as a Research Technician Assistant and with DuPont Pioneer as the North Dakota Division Services, Sales and Marketing Intern. He has been hired to work in the Northern Plains region as a precision agronomist for Farmers Edge.

Schimek was advised by Dr. Joel Ransom. Dr. Hans Kandel, Dr. Rich Zollinger and Dr. David Franzen served as his graduate committee.
