Esther McGinnis is one of the NDSU Staff Senate Campus Kudos Award recipients for May 2021. The award recognizes NDSU employees who demonstrate excellence through customer service, continuous improvement, teamwork, integrity, or quality.

McGinnis is the NDSU Extension horticulturist and an associate professor in the Department of Plant Sciences. She also leads the North Dakota Master Gardener program. She has worked at NDSU since 2013.

Administrative secretary Shannon Ueker is an assistant to McGinnis and nominated her for the recognition. In the nomination, Ueker lauded McGinnis for recognizing that new gardeners learning the hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic needed resources. To fill that need, she  organized a team of Extension professionals to create teaching videos geared to beginners.

“Esther is so fun to work for and encourages learning and growth in my job,” Ueker wrote in the nomination. “She uses her intuition, intelligence, and the insight she’s gained in her first years at NDSU to cultivate rewarding partnerships that benefit the campus and broader community.”

Campus Kudos recipients are chosen and recognized monthly at Staff Senate meetings. NDSU community members are encouraged to nominate employees through the online form at https://www.ndsu.edu/staff_senate/campus_kudos/.
