Maneka Malalgoda, a graduate student in the Cereal Science Graduate Program, was awarded the Charles Becker Graduate Student Fellowship by the American Association of Cereal Chemists International (AACCI) for the 2016-2017 academic year. Malalgoda recently completed her M.S. in Cereal Science, and began work on her Ph.D. in summer 2016. Her advisor is Dr. Senay Simsek, the Bert L. D'Appolonia Cereal Science and Technology of Wheat Endowed Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences.

Recipients of the Charles Becker Graduate Student Fellowship are selected based on their involvement and commitment to the AACCI, good academic standing, number of publications and presentations, quality of research, contributions toward the advancement of cereal science, and potential for having a successful career in cereal research.

The primary purpose of graduate student fellowships offered by the AACCI is to encourage research in the area of grain science. These fellowships are funded by the endowment funds of the AACCI Foundation, which include contributions by companies and various AACCI divisions.

Charles A. Becker was a tireless supporter of the AACCI. His most significant contribution to the AACCI was his role in the establishment of the AACCI Foundation. He chaired the AACCI Endowment/Scholarship Committee which was created in 1989.

AACCI is a global, nonprofit organization of scientists and professionals in the food industry. The main goal of this organization is to advance the understanding and knowledge of cereal science and its product development applications through research, leadership, education, superior technical services and advocacy.
