The North Dakota Grain Dealers Association (NDGDA) Education Foundation provided eight $1000 scholarships to students studying agriculture curriculum at North Dakota universities and colleges. Four of those scholarships were awarded to Department of Plant Sciences students Mackenzie Derry, Kody Durbin, Amber Hermanson and Kelsey Pladson. Derry and Durbin are seniors majoring in Crop and Weed Sciences, Pladson is a senior majoring in Food Science and Food Safety, and Hermanson is a sophomore majoring in Horticulture.

The NDGDA established the Education Foundation in 1980 and has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships and grants to students and academic programs in North Dakota since then. Students planning to work in grain marketing or agribusiness careers are given preference for the scholarships.

Derry is from Thompson, ND, is advised by Dr. Kirk Howatt and is looking for work as a soil and plant health agronomist in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota. Durbin is from Crary, ND, is advised by Brenda Deckard and is looking for work as a sales agronomist. Pladson is from Hatton, ND, is advised by Dr. Anu Vegi and is employed at Dakota Specialty Milling in Fargo, ND. Hermanson is from West Fargo, ND, is advised by Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti and wants to work as a plant breeder in a greenhouse with a long-term goal of creating modified plants that can grow in impoverished areas.

The NDGDA scholarship is an external scholarship available to all students meeting qualifications. For more information, see https://www.ndgda.org/services/educational-foundation.
