A team of graduate students from the Department of Plant Sciences won the Best Graduate Student Booth award at the 2019 Avenues of Scientific Discovery (AoSD) on February 14, 2019. The team included cereal science graduate students Madison Gohl and Jane Snelling, and visiting scholar Asli Unuvar, who presented Science on Your Plate.

AoSD is a hands-on outreach program sponsored by the North Dakota State University Center for Math and Science Education and the Office of Teaching and Learning to encourage NDSU graduate and local high school students to interact and share their interest in science and research.

This year twelve teams of graduate students presented workshops for more than 60 Fargo area high school students. A team comprised of plant sciences graduate students Matthew Brooke, Felicity Merritt, Amanda Peters and Katherine Running also participated with a booth titled Crop Domestication and Genetics.

According to the Office of Teaching and Learning, the purpose of AoSD is to provide an opportunity for local high school students to explore science careers, to give graduate students opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills and to showcase NDSU for the local community.
