Five in Plant Sciences Receive Agriculture and Extension Faculty/Staff Awards

Five Department of Plant Sciences employees were honored at the 2020 Agriculture and Extension Faculty/Staff Awards program on December 10, 2020. Assistant professor Bingcan Chen, professor Todd West, professor Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Extension agronomist Hans Kandel and grant coordinator Cora Crane received their awards during a COVID-19 friendly virtual program.

Five Department of Plant Sciences employees were honored at the 2020 Agriculture and Extension Faculty/Staff Awards program on December 10, 2020. Assistant professor Bingcan Chen, professor Todd West, professor Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Extension agronomist Hans Kandel and grant coordinator Cora Crane received their awards during a COVID-19 friendly virtual program.

Chen leads the food and cereal chemistry program. He received the Larson/Yaggie Excellence in Research Award. West leads the woody plant improvement program and received the Earl and Dorothy Foster Excellence in Teaching Award. West also coordinates the undergraduate horticulture program and is assistant dean for the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources. Hatterman-Valenti leads the high value crop production program and is assistant department head. She received the William J. and Angelyn A. Austin Excellence in Advising Award. Kandel is the Extension agronomist for broadleaf crop production. He received the AGSCO Excellence in Extension Award. Crane is the grant coordinator for Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology and received the Rick and Jody Burgum Staff Award.

Four others from the Department of Plant Sciences were nominated for awards, including research specialist Collin Auwarter for the Charles and Linda Moses Award, professor Marisol Berti for the Eugene R. Dahl Excellence in Research Award, administrative secretary Karen Jevning for the Donald and Jo Anderson Staff Award, and associate professor Thomas Peters for the Excellence in Extension Early Career Award.

Forty faculty and staff in the NDSU College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources (CAFSNR) and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Stations (NDAES) were nominated for excellence in research, teaching, Extension and support staff work. Greg Lardy, vice president for Agricultural Affairs, David Buchanan, associate dean for academic programs in the CAFSNR, Frank Casey, associate director of the NDAES, and Lynette Flage, associate director of NDSU Extension, presented the awards.
