Faculty and Staff Honored by NDSU Agriculture and Extension

Three Department of Plant Sciences faculty and staff received awards during the annual NDSU Agriculture and Extension Faculty/Staff Awards program. Frank Manthey, professor, received the Eugene R. Dahl Excellence in Research Award; Juan Osorno, associate professor, received the Larson/Yaggie Excellence in Research Award; and Shannon Ueker, administrative secretary, received the Donald and Jo Anderson Staff Award.

Three Department of Plant Sciences faculty and staff received awards during the annual NDSU Agriculture and Extension Faculty/Staff Awards program on December 7, 2017. The program recognizes excellence in research, teaching, Extension and support staff efforts in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources (CAFSNR), the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (NDAES), and the NDSU Extension Service.

Frank Manthey, professor, received the Eugene R. Dahl Excellence in Research Award. The award recognizes outstanding faculty and researchers with 11 or more years of service whose research program has gained significant recognition in the state, region or nation and/or internationally. Manthey has held a faculty position at NDSU since 1998 and leads the durum and pasta quality project.

Juan Osorno, associate professor, received the Larson/Yaggie Excellence in Research Award. The award recognizes outstanding faculty and researchers with 10 or fewer years of service for significant research contributions in their area of investigation. Osorno has held a faculty position at NDSU since 2007 and leads the dry edible bean breeding project.

Shannon Ueker, administrative secretary, received the Donald and Jo Anderson Staff Award. The award recognizes significant contributions to the mission of NDSU Agriculture and/or Extension by clerical staff. Ueker has worked in the Department of Plant Sciences at NDSU since 2013.

Six other Department of Plant Sciences faculty and staff also were nominated for awards. Michael Christoffers, associate professor, was nominated for the H. Roald and Janet Lund Excellence in Teaching Award; Cora Crane, grants coordinator, was nominated for the Rick and Jody Burgum Staff Award; Greta Gramig, associate professor, was nominated for the Earl and Dorothy Foster Excellence in Teaching Award; Hans Kandel, professor and Extension agronomist, was nominated for the AGSCO Excellence in Extension Award; Albert (Jody) VanderWal, research specialist, was nominated for the Charles and Linda Moses Staff Award; and Todd West, professor, was nominated for the William J. and Angelyn A. Austin Excellence in Advising Award.

NDSU President Dean Bresciani addressed the gathering. Ken Grafton, vice president for Agricultural Affairs, director of the NDAES and dean of the CAFSNR; David Buchanan, associate dean for academic programs in the CAFSNR; and Chris Boerboom, director of the NDSU Extension Service, introduced the nominees and presented the awards during the program.
