Eddy Rodolfo Ixcotoyac Cabrera successfully defended his Plant Sciences Master’s thesis, Mapping the Ur-5 Conferring Resistance to Common Bean Rust, on December 3, 2020 at North Dakota State University. He was advised by Dr. Juan Osorno, associate professor and dry bean breeder.

Ixcotoyac Cabrera’s research focused on mapping the Ur-5 rust resistance gene, one of the important diseases in dry bean production. During his research, he learned about gene location, molecular markers, and which proteins are involved in the mechanisms of resistance against rust. “This information will aid dry bean breeding programs to develop new cultivars with a broader and long-term resistance against rust races,” he says.

Ixcotoyac Cabrera is originally from Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala, and earned his bachelor’s degree in food science and technology from ZAMORANO Pan-American Agricultural School in Honduras.

He says he chose to pursue his Master’s degree in the bean breeding program at NDSU because bean is a staple crop of great importance in his home country, and he recognized that the Plant Sciences department breeding programs are having a positive impact on agricultural production worldwide.

Going forward, Ixcotoyac Cabrera would like to “contribute to [the improvement of] the agricultural systems of Guatemala.”

His graduate committee consisted of Osorno, Dr. Phillip McClean, Dr. Julie Pasche, and Dr. Asunta Thompson.
