Dr. Marisol Berti

Plant Sciences associate professor Dr. Marisol Berti was recognized during the NDSU Celebration of Faculty Excellence on May 6. She received two NDSU Development Foundation Awards for the 2015-16 academic year: the Carl A. and Jean Y. White Memorial Ag Research Endowment and the Gordon A. Larson Agricultural Research Endowment.

Berti is the forages and biomass crop production project leader at NDSU. The endowments will be used to gather preliminary data to develop guidelines for cover crops management in conventional cropping systems in North Dakota. The long term goal is to increase the adoption of sustainable practices in North Dakota cropping systems. “Both endowments seek to support preliminary research that in the long-term will impact North Dakota agriculture,” said Berti.

According to Berti, the benefits of using cover crops are nutrient cycling, reduced soil erosion, improved water quality, increased habitats for wildlife and more pollen sources for pollinators.

The annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence is sponsored by the NDSU Development Foundation to recognize the outstanding research and academic achievement of NDSU’s faculty. For more information, visit www.ndsufoundation.com/FacultyExcel.html.
