Muhammad Arif Uz Zaman, M.S. graduate in Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University, presented Genetic Dissection and Molecular Approaches of Root Morphology of Canola on Friday, April 25, 2014.

Winter and spring canola differ greatly in root characteristics. High yielding winter types possess vigorous root systems, while comparatively less yielding spring types have a weaker root system. Arif’s research analyzed the genetics of root vigor in crosses between winter and spring types of canola, as well as Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping for the trait. Additionally, he worked on the flowering time variation between winter and spring canola types.

While working on his M.S., Arif, a Dhaka, Bangladesh native, was treasurer of the Bangladesh Student Organization (BSO). He is currently the secretary of the Plant Sciences Graduate Student Association and says the department has “excellent and well-equipped field and molecular research facilities, and a friendly environment, just like a family.”

Arif hopes to continue research in canola root morphology under the instruction of Dr. Mukhlesur Rahman as a Ph.D. candidate. He says he’s chosen NDSU and plans to continue here because, “NDSU is one of the best schools for studying plant breeding and genetics. The Department of Plant Sciences is running the top breeding programs in the USA for almost all major crops, and has state of the art field and lab facilities. I considered this school the best place to master classical breeding techniques in association with molecular breeding and genetics.”

Muhammad Arif Uz Zaman’s graduate committee included Dr. Phillip McClean, Dr. David Horvath and Dr. Luis del Rio-Mendoza. His adviser was Dr. Mukhlesur Rahman.
