Student Chosen for Future Leaders in Science Program
North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences graduate student Jesse Puka-Beals was chosen to participate in the 2020 Future Leaders in Science program of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America.
Zhao Jin Receives Poster Presentation Award at 2019 Scab Forum
North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences visiting scholar Zhao Jin was awarded second place in the Post-Doctoral Researcher Poster Competition at the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative 2019 National Fusarium Head Blight Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in December.

New Mugo Pine Cultivar Announced
A new woody plant selection was introduced by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the North Dakota State University Research Foundation. Hyland Splendor™ Mugo Pine is a winter hardy selection that maintains its dark green needle color during the winter months. The selection has been in development by the NDSU Woody Plant Improvement program for over 28 years.

Student Receives Oil Chemists Award
Cereal Science doctoral student Yang Lan was selected to receive a 2020 Honored Student Award by the American Oil Chemists’ Society.

2019 NDSU Crop Variety Releases Announced
The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station released new crop varieties ND Rolette soybean, ND Falcon pinto bean, ND Pegasus great northern bean, ND Whitetail white kidney bean and ND Gardner winter rye in 2019. The North Dakota County Seed Increase Program distributed ND Rolette soybean and ND Hammond flax (2018) for the first time in the spring of 2019 and ND Gardner winter rye in the fall of 2019.
Alexa Lystad Defends M.S. Thesis
Alexa Lystad successfully defended her Plant Sciences M.S. thesis, Ethofumesate 4SC Applied Postemergence in Sugarbeet, November 19, 2019 at North Dakota State University.
Mingyi Zhang Defends Ph.D. dissertation
Mingyi Zhang successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation research in Genomics and Bioinformatics on January 22, 2020. The title of her dissertation is Homoeologous Recombination-based Chromosome Engineering for Physical Mapping and Introgression in Wheat and Its Relatives Aegilops Speltoides and Thinopyrum Elongatum. She is advised by Xiwen Cai.

Student Receives Graduate Student Showcase Award
Department of Plant Sciences master’s student Kutay Yilmaz won the People’s Choice Award for Best Display for his tabletop display in the NDSU Graduate Student Showcase held in conjunction with the Three Minute Thesis Competition.
Student Awarded Mid America CropLife Scholarship
Crop and weed sciences student Brendan Hanson was awarded a Mid America CropLife Association Young Leader Scholarship.
Wheat Quality Technician Recognized in Thesis Competition
North Dakota State University wheat quality laboratory technician Edil Vidal Torres was recognized for her second-place finish in the 2020 Caminos Thesis Competition sponsored by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education in partnership with Texas State University and funded through a grant provided by the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture.

Graduate Student Recognized at Weed Science Meeting
North Dakota State University plant sciences doctoral student and research specialist Nathan Haugrud won first place in the Western Society of Weed Science (WSWS) graduate student oral paper contest at the WSWS and Weed Science Society of America joint annual meeting in March.
Graduate Student Wins American Society for Horticultural Science Contest
Jesse Puka-Beals has been named one of five winners of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) eOrganic Article Competition and will present his article at the 2020 ASHS Annual Conference in Orlando, FL August 9-13.

Nine Department of Plant Sciences employees and a retiree were recognized by North Dakota State University for their years of service.
Yuan Liu Defends M.S. Thesis
Yuan Liu successfully defended his Master’s thesis in Plant Sciences on February 26, 2020 at North Dakota State University. His thesis is Genetic Dissection of Tan Spot Resistance in Wheat and he is advised by Xuehui Li.
Jesse Puka-Beals Defends M.S. Thesis
Jesse Puka-Beals successfully defended his plant sciences M.S. degree on March 24, 2020. His thesis is titled Combining Cover Crops, Strip Tillage and Novel Mulches to Manage Weeds in Vegetable Cropping Systems. Greta Gramig served as his advisor.
José A. Rivera Dompenciel Defends Plant Sciences Ph.D. Dissertation
José A. Rivera Dompenciel successfully defended his Plant Sciences Ph.D. dissertation, Developing a New SNP Chip for Genomic Selection in the North Dakota State University Barley Breeding Program, on March 31, 2020. He was advised by Dr. Richard Horsley.
Kutay Yilmaz Defends M.S. Thesis
Kutay Yilmaz successfully defended his plant sciences M.S. degree on April 2, 2020. The title of his thesis is Seeding Date and Genotype Maturity Interactions on Grain Sorghum [Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench] Performance in North Dakota. His advisor is Dr. Burton Johnson.
Plant Sciences Teachers Focus on Students during COVID-19 Remote Teaching
Like most college and university teachers in the U.S., North Dakota State University instructors had less than two weeks to begin teaching the second half of their spring classes completely online. As many of the Department of Plant Sciences instructors transitioned online, their experiences had a similar theme, which is to focus on the well-being of the students they teach.
Brenda Deckard Honored during NDSU Ag Week
Department of Plant Sciences Student Services Director Brenda Deckard was awarded the Open Door Award during the annual NDSU Ag Week. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies agriculture by always being there for their neighbor.
