Zollinger Retirement Announced
Extension weed specialist, Dr. Rich Zollinger, retired from North Dakota State University on December 31, 2017. Zollinger worked almost 28 years as a professor and Extension specialist in weed control. During his tenure, he received numerous awards and was active in many professional organizations. He published more than 200 reports of his research, averaged over 100 presentations annually at stakeholder meetings and scientific conferences, and mentored and advised numerous NDSU graduate students.
2017 Variety Releases Announced
The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station released new crop varieties ND17009GT soybean, ND Benson soybean, ND Stutsman soybean, ND VitPro spring wheat, ND Grano durum and ND Riveland durum in 2017. Lang-MN spring wheat was released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. These new soybean and spring wheat varieties were distributed for the first time by the ND County Seed Increase Program in the spring of 2017. The durum varieties will be distributed in the spring of 2018.
In Memory of Stan Stancyk
North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences Research Specialist Stan Stancyk passed away December 29, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 3, 2018 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN. Stancyk worked in the Department of Plant Sciences in the durum wheat breeding program for 27 years.
Haugrud Awarded Sugarbeet Scholarship
Plant Sciences Master’s student Nathan Haugrud was awarded the Alan Dexter Scholarship by the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board of Minnesota and North Dakota.
Lym Receives Awards for Perennial Weed Control Work
Dr. Rod Lym accepted two awards for his work with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Weed Control Association during annual weed meetings in Bismarck, North Dakota in January.
In Memory of Rachel Olson
Retired North Dakota State University food technologist Rachel Olson passed away January 22, 2018 in Fargo, ND after a long struggle with cancer.
Introduction to Experimental Design: A Short Course
Dr. Richard Horsley taught a short course for field and laboratory researchers to refresh their knowledge of statistics and experimental design. The course, Introduction to Statistical Experimental Design, took place January 16-18, 2018 in Loftsgard Hall at North Dakota State University.
Zuk Coordinates Food Donation to Indian Reservation
Department of Plant Sciences associate professor Dr. Alan Zuk and former student James Steinberger combined efforts to deliver a large supply of dry edible beans to the St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Zuk Receives Lakota Star Quilt
Alan Zuk was presented a Lakota Star Quilt by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in honor of an outreach he made to the St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, St. Francis, South Dakota, in January.
Graduate Students Receive Production Ag Travel Grants
Four North Dakota State University Plant Sciences graduate students received travel grants to attend the 2018 University of Minnesota Production Agriculture Symposium in February. They each presented on their respective research.
Graduate Student Receives Oil Chemists' Travel Grant
Cereal Science doctoral student Minwei Xu was awarded a Lipid Oxidation and Quality Division Student Travel Grant to attend the 2018 American Oil Chemists’ Society Annual Meeting and Expo in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May.
NDSU Volunteers Judge Crops at North Dakota State Crop Show
Joel Ransom has organized judges for the North Dakota State Crop Show since he became the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences cereal crops Extension specialist in 2002. On March 2 this year, twenty-four judges evaluated more than 200 crop samples submitted by 4-H and FFA students and others submitting in Open Classes. Eighteen of the judges are current NDSU Department of Plant Sciences employees.
Graduate Students Receive Awards at Plant Science Symposium
North Dakota State University graduate students from the Departments of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology attended the 34th annual Plant Science Graduate Student Symposium at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, in March. Nathan Haugrud, Sergio Cabello Leiva and Rebecca Spanner each won an award for their presentations.
Horticulture and Forestry Club Attends National Competition
North Dakota State University Horticulture and Forestry Club students attended the 2018 National Collegiate Landscape Competition sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals in March. The group gave a strong performance, ranking 13th overall. Two students placed in individual events and five students received scholarships.
Graduate Student Wins Grain Quality Poster Award
Ana Magallanes López, a M.S. student in the Cereal Science graduate program of the North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences, won the “People’s Choice Award” for the best poster at the 2018 NC-213 U.S. Quality Grains Research Consortium Annual Meeting. Her poster was “Wet Milling Affects Deoxynivalenol Concentration in Wheat Starch and Gluten”.
Cereal Science Researchers Attend Conferences in Mexico
Three members of the North Dakota State University Cereal Sciences Wheat Quality and Carbohydrate Research team participated in two back-to-back conferences March 11-17, 2018 in Mexico City. Senay Simsek, Kristin Whitney and Ana Magallanes-López presented research at the 4th International Association for Cereal Science and Technology Latin American Cereal Conference (ICC-LACC) and the International Gluten Workshop (IGW).
Kaiser Receives Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
Amber Kaiser, a Ph.D. student in the Cereal Science graduate program at North Dakota State University, was selected to receive a NDSU College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for the 2018-19 academic year.
Student Honored at Graduate Student Council Research Symposium
Ph.D. student Andrej Svyantek won second place for his oral presentation at the Second Annual NDSU Graduate Student Council Research Symposium on April 6, 2018.

Wheat Quality Students Recognized by Gamma Sigma Delta
Maneka Malalgoda and Kaitlyn Peterson, students in the Wheat Quality Research group at North Dakota State University, were honored by the NDSU Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta in April.
