Four NDSU Agronomy Club students won awards during the 2014 International Annual Meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America in Long Beach, CA.

Jodi Boe, a senior Crop and Weed Sciences major, took first place in the Collegiate Crops Judging contest. In this event, contestants compete in plant and seed identification, commercial grain grading and seed analysis.

The Agronomy Club placed second in the Quiz Bowl team event. Team members included Boe, Justin Zahradka, a junior Crop and Weed Sciences major, John Breker, a senior Soil Science major, and Nevada Turbiville, a senior Crop and Weed Sciences major. In Quiz Bowl, teams of four earn points by answering questions on agronomy, crops, soils, plant science and environmental science.

The Agronomy Club is advised by Kirk Howatt, Crop and Weed Sciences undergraduate coordinator and associate professor in weed science.

Over 4,000 scientists, professionals, educators and students attended the annual meeting, 370 of which were undergraduate students. The undergraduate student program of the three societies, known as Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences (SASES), held their annual meeting concurrent with the larger meeting.
