MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Embden loam and Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.2 to 7.3; 1.8% to 2.6% organic matter; soil-P was very high, soil-K was medium to  very high; soil-S was medium.

Previous crop:

Conventional: 2006 - carrot, onion 2005 - cabbage, sweetcorn; 2004 ‑ field corn, mustard.

 Roundup ready:  2006 - field corn; 2005 - onion, sweetcorn; 2004 ‑  sweet corn.

Seedbed

Preparation:

Disk on April 24.  Multiweed (field cultivate) twice on May 9 to smooth the seedbed and to incorporate herbicide on the conventional beans.  Disk area for roundup ready beans on May 16 and multiweed all soybean ground

Planting:

Planted Conventional soybeans on May 9 and roundup ready beans on May 11 in 30-inch rows.  All beans were inoculated just prior to planting.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 5 ft (2 rows) wide.  There were 3 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 10, broadcast 20 lbs N/acre, 45 lbs P2O5/acre, 51 lbs K2O/acre and 13 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, 11-52-0 and 0-0-60.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Conventional and roundup ready:  Trust (1½ pt/acre) on May 9.  Topsin (1 lb/acre) on August 3 and August 11 for disease control.  Lorsban (1 pt/acre) on August 3 to control soybean aphid.

Conventional soybean: Valor (2.5 oz/acre) on May 9, and Fusilade (8 oz/acre) + MSO (1pt/acre) on June 27.

Roundup ready: Glyphosate Original (1qt/acre) + NIS (0.5%v/v) + AMS (1 lb/10 gal), Cornerstone (40 oz/acre) + AMS (1 lb/10 gal) on June 29 and Cornerstone (48 oz/acre) +  NIS (0.5% v/v) + AMS (1 lb/10 gal) July 7.

Harvest:

Harvested on September 27 with a Hege plot combine.
