DRY EDIBLE BEAN VARIETY TRIAL

These replicated trials had 4 pinto bean and 5 navy/black bean varieties.

 

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 

 

Soil:

Embden sandy loam and Helca sandy loam; pH=7.1; 2.5% organic matter; soil-P was very high; soil-K and soil-S were medium.

Previous crop:

2006 - soybean; 2005 - field corn; 2004 - cabbage and potato.

Seedbed

Preparation:

Disked and coulter chiseled in the fall;   Multiweed (field cultivate) three times; once May 11 to smooth seedbed and twice on May 29 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Planted on May 31. 

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 10 ft (4 rows) wide.  There were 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

November 2006, broadcast 9 lbs N/acre, 43 lbs P2O5/acre, 101 lbs K2O/acre and 13.5 lbs S/acre as 11-52-0, 0-0-60 and 90% elemental sulfur.  Apply 50 lbs N/acre as urea on June 29.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Trust (1½ pt/acre) on May 29, Raptor (4 oz/acre ) + MSO (1% v/v) + AMS (2.5 lb/acre) on June 26 and Basagran (2 pt /acre) + COC (2 pt/acre) on July 13 for weed control.  Topsin (1 lb/acre) on July 13 and July 18, Proline (5 oz/acre) on July 21, July 27 and August 2 for disease control.

Harvest:

Harvested on September 27.  Seventeen feet of the two center rows were undercut and then threshed with a plot combine.
