Results summary

Table 1.  Days to harvest, yield, head size, and overall quality score for cabbage harvested early (for fresh market).

Table 2.  Head characteristics of cabbage harvested early (for fresh market).

Table 3.  Days to harvest, yield, quality, and head size for late harvested (slaw market).

Table 4.  Head characteristics of cabbage, harvested late (slaw market).

Cabbage grows well in the cool climate of North Dakota.  We evaluated the suitability of six cabbage hybrids for both the fresh and slaw markets.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Embden loam; pH=7.1; 2.9% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high, soil-S was low.

Previous crops:

2006 – barley; 2005 – cabbage; 2004 – field corn.

Seedbed preparation:

Strip till fall of 2006.

Planting:

Direct seeded cabbage on April 23 with a Monosem precision planter. Cabbage seeds were placed ½ to ¾ inches deep into the strip tilled seedbed and were spaced 7 13/16 inches apart in 16-inch rows. Plants were later thinned to 15½ inches apart (about 25,000 plants/acre).

Plots:

Main plots were 34 ft long by one row (16 inches) wide. Each main plot was divided into two 17-ft long sections. The study had 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

November 2006, broadcast 9 lbs N/acre, 43 lbs P2O5/acre, 101 lbs K2O/acre and 13 lbs S/acre as 11-52-0, 0-0-60 and 90% elemental Sulfur.  April 30 applied 30 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0.  Apply 30 lbs N/acre on June 5 as 32‑0‑0 and 60 lbs N/acre on June 20 as 32-0-0.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest Control:

Weeds were controlled using Dacthal (10 lbs/acre) and Glyphosate (1 qt/acre) + NIS (0.5% v/v) + AMS (1 lb/10 gal) on April 27, Fusilade (10 oz/acre) + NIS (0.5% v/v) on May 9, Lentagan (2 lbs/acre) on May 23, Select (8 oz/acre) + COC (1.0% v/v) on June 4, Goal tender (4 oz/acre) on June 4 and June 14 and by hand weeding.  Sprayed Sevin (2 qt/acre) on June 25, July 11 and July 27 and Baythroid (2 oz/acre) on July 2, July 20, August 3, August 8 and August 24 to control cabbage looper and cabbageworm.

Harvest:

One section of each main plot was hand harvested when heads were firm and of marketable size (early harvest for fresh market). The other section was harvested about two weeks later (late harvest for slaw market).  Cabbage head characteristics were measured on representative cabbage heads selected at each harvest from each plot.

RESULTS

For the fresh market Rotunda and Cecile had the highest yield and Cecile looked the best.  For the slaw market Artost and Cecile had the highest yeilds and Artost looked the best.
