CARROT HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

W. Albus, L. Besemann and H. Eslinger

In North Dakota, carrots grow very well.  We tested cut and peel, cello, jumbo and dicing types of carrots.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Maddock sandy loam and Embden loam; pH=6.6; 2.7% organic matter; soil-P,  soil-K and soil-S were very high.

Previous crop:

2005 - sweet corn; 2004 - mustard and field corn; 2003 - pepper, tomato and onion.

Seedbed

Preparation:

Fall disk.  Multiweed (field cultivate) on April 12 to incorporate fertilizer.  Chisel plow on April 17.  Multiweed (field cultivate) three times; once on April 25 to level seed bed and twice on May 5 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Direct seeded raw carrot seeds on May 5 with a Monosem precision planter.  Carrot planting pattern was 2 lines per row (2.5 inches between lines in a row) for the processing and dicing carrots and 3 lines per row (2 inches between lines in the row) for all other carrots with all rows on 16-inch centers. Planting rate was about 330,000 seeds/acre for dicing, 500,000 seeds/acre for jumbo, 800,000 seeds/acre for cello and 1.2 million seeds/acre for cut and peel carrots.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by three feet wide (two rows plus the wheel track). The study had 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 10, broadcast 20 lbs N/acre, 45 lbs P2O5/acre, 51 lbs K2O/acre and 13 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24, 11-52-0 and 0-0-60 and on April 12 applied 50 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0.  Stream-bar 30 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on June 7 and June 21.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Weed control Treflan preplant incorporated (1.5 pt/acre on May 4), Lorox           (1 lb/acre on May 5 and 2 lbs/acre on June 16) and by hand weeding. Sprayed Sevin XLR (1 qt/acre on June 23, June 29, July 14, July 21 and August 3) and Baythroid (2 oz/acre on August 15 and August 22) to control leafhopper.

Harvest:

The carrots were all harvested once: cut and peel on July 14, cello on August 28 and August 31, jumbo on October 23 and October 24 and dicing on October 26 and October 27.  The harvest area was two rows wide by six feet long for all carrots.

RESULTS

For cut and peel carrots Napa had the highest yield.  Niagara had the highest total yields of the cello type carrots. Niagara had the highest total yield and Nervi had

the highest yield of # 1 carrots of the jumbo carrots.  Nervi had the highest yield of the dicing carrots.  Nevada had the highest percentage of dry matter.
