SOYBEAN ROW SPACING BY PLANT POPULATION STUDY
Richard Greenland
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: |
Embden sandy loam and Hecla sandy loam; pH=6.5; 2.2% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K was very high; soil-S was medium. |
Previous crops: |
2004 - cabbage; 2003 - sweet corn and field corn; 2002 - winter squash and pumpkin. |
Seedbed preparation: |
Chisel plow on April 14. Disked on May 6. Multiweeded (field cultivated) twice on May 19 to incorporate fertilizer and herbicide, and to smooth the seedbed. |
Planting: |
Planted on May 23, May 24 and May 26 in 10, 20 and 30-inch rows. All beans were inoculated just prior to planting. |
Plots: |
Plots were 17 ft long by 12 ½ ft (6, 8 or 12 rows) wide. The study had 4 reps. |
Fertilizer: |
On April 15 broadcast 26 lbs N/acre and 30 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. |
Irrigation: |
Surface drip irrigation as needed. |
Pest control: |
Applied Treflan (1pt/acre on May 19, preplant incorporated), Raptor + NIS (4 oz/acre + 0.25% v/v on June 7), Glypohasphate + NIS (16 oz/acre + 0.5% v/v on July 7 and July 20) and Gramoxone + NIS (12.8 oz/acre + 0.125% v/v on September 22). |
Harvest: |
Harvested on October 3 with a Hege plot combine. |

1Stand as of June 10, about 18 days after planting.
2Adjusted to 13% moisture.
3Values in this column and section were all significantly different from each other.
4Although
the statistics say there is interaction here, the differences do not
follow a logical pattern.
