PEPPER HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Richard Greenland, Leonard Besemann and Heidi Eslinger

Results summary

Table 40. Quantity and yield of peppers in the pepper hybrid performance trial

Table 41. Cumulative yields of marketable (US Fancy plus US #1) peppers in the pepper performance trial

Table 42. Quality of peppers in the Oakes Irrigation Research Site 2005 pepper hybrid performance trial

Peppers grow surprisingly well in southern North Dakota, although late in the season some hot peppers lose their heat if the weather is too cool. In cool years, yields and quality may be reduced.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Soil:

Maddock sandy loam; pH=7.4; 1.7% organic matter; soil-Pand soil-K was very high; soil-S was very low.

Previous crops:

2004 - sweet corn; 2003 - edible bean; 2002 - edible bean.

Seedbed

preparation:

Chisel plow on April 14. Disked on May 3. Multiweeded (field cultivated) three times: once on May 3 to smooth seedbed and incorporate fertilizer; twice on June 2 to incorporate herbicide.

Planting:

Peppers were seeded in the greenhouse on April 5. Plants were hand transplanted on June 2. Planting pattern was paired rows (12 inches between rows) on 4-ft centers. In-row spacing was 18 inches within a single row, which put a plant every 9 inches for the paired rows.

Plots:

Plots were 17 ft long by 4 ft (one paired row) wide. There were 4 reps.

Fertilizer:

On April 15, broadcast 26 lbs N/acre and 30 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Fertigate 40 lbs N/acre on June 18 and 50 lbs N/acre on July 7 as 28-0-0.

Irrigation:

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed.

Pest

control:

Weeds were controlled by rototilling and by hand weeding. Sprayed Quadris (10 oz/acre on July 1) for disease control.

Harvest:

Hand harvested August 4 to September 29.

RESULTS

All of the pepper tested had good quality and yield. Telestar had the highest yield of the bell peppers but had the lowest number and weight of fancy peppers. Tormenta had the highest yield and number of the jalapeƱo peppers.
