Pumpkins grow well in North Dakota. Early maturing pumpkins are usually best, but later maturing ones do well in some years. In this study we evaluated 14 pumpkin varieties.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: |
Maddock sandy loam, Gardena loam, Embden loam and Embden sandy loam; pH=6.9; 2.3% organic matter; soil-Pand soil-K was very high; soil-S was low. |
Previous crops: |
2004 - field corn; 2003 - sweet corn and potato; 2002 - pumpkin and carrot. |
Seedbed preparation: |
Chisel plow on April 14. Disked on May 6. Multiweeded (field cultivated) on May 27 to smooth seedbed and to incorporate fertilizer. |
Planting: |
Seeds planted 1 ft apart in rows 9.5 ft apart on May 27. On July 8 thinned to an in-row spacing of one plant every 3 ft. |
Plots: |
Plots were 17 ft long by 8 ft (one row) wide. |
Fertilizer: |
On April 15, broadcast 26 lbs N/acre and 30 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Fertigate 40 lbs N/acre on June 18 and 50 lbs N/acre on July 7 as 28-0-0. |
Irrigation: |
Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed. |
Pest control: |
Weeds were controlled by rototilling and by hand weeding. Sprayed Ambush (8 oz/acre on July 5), and Asana (8 oz/acre on July 27) to control cucumber beetle. |
Harvest: |
Hand harvested September 29 to September 30. |
Candy Corn (5002) was the only miniature pumpkin tested. The early stand was less than other varieties but the yield in number of pumpkins was good and it was nice looking. Hybrid Pam was the only pie type pumpkin tested. Hybrid Pam had the second highest number of marketable pumpkins and had the highest overall score. Of the medium pumpkins, all except Charisma and Neon were similar in most classes. Neon had lower yields but had the highest percentage of marketable pumpkins of the medium sizes. Aladdin was the largest of the pumpkins and had the highest yield in tons per acre and also had the highest percentage of marketable pumpkins.
