Corn generally grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. But yields of late maturing hybrids are at risk of being reduced by cool weather or early frosts. This performance trial tested 48 hybrids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
|
Soil: |
Embden sandy loam, Maddock sandy loam and Hecla sandy loam; pH=6.9; 2.4% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was low. |
|
Previous crops: |
2004 - cabbage, carrot, edible bean, field pea, millet, mustard, soybean, sweet corn and wheat, ; 2003 - potato; 2002 - cabbage, carrot, edible bean, field corn, onion, potato, soybean, sugar beet, sweet corn and wheat. |
|
Seedbed preparation: |
Chisel plow on April 14. Disked on April 27. Multiweeded (field cultivated) on May 3 to incorporate fertilizer and smooth seed bed. |
|
Planting: |
Planted May 4 in 30-inch rows. Thinned to 28,000 plants/acre on June 27. |
|
Fertilizer: |
On April 15, broadcast 26 lbs N/acre and 30 lbs S/acre as 21-0-0-24. Applied 25 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on May 3. Knifed in 90 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 + Agrotain (2.4 qt/ton of N) on June 17. Fertigate 40 lbs N/acre on June 18 and 50 lbs N/acre on July 7 as 28-0-0. |

Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed |
|
Pest Control: |
AAtrex 9-O+ Frontier (0.5 lb ai/acre + 20 oz/acre on May 5), Option + MSO +28-0-0 (1.5oz + 1.5 pt + 1.5 pt/acre), cultivation (June 22) and hand weeding controlled weeds. Applied Dipel (1 lb/acre on July 6) for control of corn borer. |

Harvest: |
Harvested with a plot combine on October 10. |
