FIELD CORN HYBRID PERFORMANCE TRIAL

Corn generally grows very well in this area of North Dakota. The short summer is compensated for by long days and lots of sunshine. But yields of late maturing hybrids are at risk of being reduced by cool weather or early frosts. This performance trial tested 100 hybrids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Soil: |
Embden loam, Gardena loam, Embden sandy loam, Maddock sandy loam and Hecla sandy loam; pH=7.1; 2.5% organic matter; soil-P and soil-K were very high; soil-S was low. |
Previous crops: |
2003 - onion, potato and sweetcorn; 2002 - soybean, pumpkin, carrot and potato; 2001 - potato and field corn. |
Seedbed preparation: |
Disked on April 28. Multiweeded (field cultivated) on April 29 to incorporate fertilizer and smooth seed bed. |
Planting: |
Planted April 30 in 30-inch rows. Thinned to 28,000 plants/acre on June 24. |
Fertilizer: |
On April 15, broadcast 20 lbs N/acre and 24 lbs S/acre as 20-0-0-24. Applied 70 lbs N/acre as 28-0-0 on April 27. Knifed in 125 lbs of N/acre as 28-0-0 + Agrotain (2.4 qt/ton of N) on June 23. |
Irrigation: |
Overhead sprinkler irrigation as needed |
Pest Control: |
Outlook + AAtrex (1 pt/acre + 0.5 lb ai/acre on May 4), cultivation (June 29 and June 30) and hand weeding controlled weeds. Applied Dipel (2 lb/acre on July 7 and July 15) for control of corn borer. |
Harvest: |
Harvested with a plot combine on November 2. |
RESULTS
Yields were below average and harvest moisture was above average due to the cool weather.
